The Institution of Education Pubic education is federally funded and supported High focus on creating relationships Plays large role in the “American Dream” Credentialism- social status is linked to having an academic degree (placement on the social ladder depends on highest degree required Manifest functions Knowledge Socialization Transmission of culture Social placement Latent Functions: Restricting young people Social capital Cultural capital

Why the Gap? Linked directly to race, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Poorer communities receive poorer education due to lack of resources The education gap can be seen within different school districts, even in the same school (advanced, remedial, etc.)

Effects of the Gap Unequal opportunities for students with fewer resources Crime and deviance linked to levels of education and opportunities Poverty level- 13.5% Stunts the economy’s growth U.S’s educational standing 1970 America had the world’s leading educational system America now ranks 20th
