Our Heritage AIEE (1884) – American Institute of Electrical Engineers 2/19/2019 Our Heritage The badge of the new IEEE combined the right hand rule from the IRE with the kite from the AIEE AIEE (1884) – American Institute of Electrical Engineers IRE (1912) – Institute of Radio Engineers IEEE (1963) Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers formed from merger of AIEE & IRE  The history of IEEE dates back more than 125 years to the founding of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers or AIEE. It was founded by American industrialists to develop a skilled workforce and prepare standards for U.S. electrical industries. Bell and Edison were founding members. The IRE or Institute of Radio Engineers was formed in 1912 by radio electronics pioneers who did not feel fully at home in an electric power-oriented AIEE. The IRE differed from the AIEE also in that it was positioned at inception to be global. Overlapping membership and technology interests led to the formation of IEEE in 1963 with a merger of the AIEE and IRE.

Organization Grouped into geographic areas reflecting where we live and work … 10 Geographic Regions 333 Sections within Regions 1,855 Student Branches at universities in 80 countries …and technical areas based on our fields and interests 38 Societies and 7 Technical Councils 2,081 Chapters (within local Sections) IEEE is organized geographically with 10 regions and local sections and student branches. 45 societies and technical councils comprise the technical organization.

Sections Provide a community of colleagues Members build networks through local Section, Chapter, Student Branch activities Volunteer leaders develop new skills Gain management, teamwork and leadership experience Provide local professional and technical activities Recognize achievements of members and others The local IEEE sections provide a community of colleagues whose geographic area may range as wide as a single country or a single major city. Members build a network through these local Section, Chapter, and Student Branch activities. Volunteer leaders also Gain management, teamwork and leadership experience by participating and leading these activities. In addition to providing local professional and technical activities, they also recognize achievements of members and others.

Societies & Councils Bring members together with similar technical interests Sponsor conferences, workshops tutorials, seminars, etc Develop publications: Journals, Magazines, Newsletters Recognize member accomplishments The IEEE societies and councils bring members together who have similar technical interests. Chapters are subunits of the societies and councils and exist within IEEE Sections. These technical organizations sponsor such activities as conferences, workshops tutorials, and seminars and create and manage journals, Magazines, and Newsletters. The Societies also have an extensive program to recognize the technical and professional achievements of member and non-members.

Publications More than 3 million articles, 3400 standards in IEEE digital library Almost 8M articles downloaded per month More than 2M engineers, scientists and students have free access 150+ journals, transactions and magazines 16 of the 20 top-cited publications in electrical and electronics engineering The digital library platform now contains more than 3 million articles. These articles, along with tutorials, over 3400 technical standards and other intellectual property are made accessible to members and subscribers through the IEEE Xplore platform. Xplore has become one of the most successful endeavors for IEEE and significant resources are dedicated to continuous improvements and advancements. Now almost 8 million articles on average are being downloaded every month. More than 2M engineers, scientists and students have access to the more than 150 journals, transactions and magazines. The quality and prominence of IEEE publications continues to lead all other technical publishers in our fields of interest. For example, IEEE has 16 of the 20 top-cited publications in electrical and electronics engineering

IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Oversees development of globally recognized standards within IEEE 7,000 individual members 200 corporate members Over 20,000 standards developers worldwide Over 900 active standards More than 500 standards under development As a unit within IEEE, the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) is a global standardization body comprised of individual and corporate members and other contributing technologists, who develop consensus-based standards that drive the functionality, capabilities and interoperability of a wide range of products and services that transform the way people live, work and communicate. The IEEE-SA draws upon the IEEE technical committees to Sponsor the technical work, and can connect to other aspects of IEEE’s vast membership and research strengths. This also means that IEEE standards development activities can benefit from the breadth of expertise that exists in the organization overall. IEEE-SA is truly international, with a global membership of over 7,000 experts and more than 20,000 people who participate in standards development activities. IEEE-SA corporate membership includes many leading companies from North America, Asia, Europe, and other parts of the world. One of the characteristics that makes IEEE-SA a unique place for standards development is that it has both an individual method (one person, one vote), it has in recent years added the corporate method (one company, one vote). This provides two choices for conducting the standards development work, allowing flexibility to industry and standards developers. It is also worth noting that IEEE-SA, like IEEE, is governed by volunteer members. It is also an independent organization, not affiliated with any government. IEEE standards are globally used and implemented. IEEE 802.11, which is often referred to as Wi-Fi, IEEE 802.3, Ethernet, or IEEE 1588, Precision Clock Synchronization Protocol. And of course, as part of the broad IEEE, IEEE-SA is working in the cross-cutting technology areas, including smart grid, electric vehicles, and the Internet of Things. 11

Education Programs IEEE E-Learning Library Education Partners Program Skills Certifications IEEE Pre-University Programs Pre-University Teacher In-Service Program (TISP) TryEngineering.org TryComputing.org currently in development Accreditation IEEE E-Learning Library is comprised of more than 65 one-hour interactive online courses in IEEE’s technical areas of interest. Subscriptions are available for Corporate, University, Government and Individual Members. Participants can earn continuing education units and professional development hours. The IEEE Education Partners Program offers online courses from university and corporate institutions at a discount. IEEE also offers several skills certifications. These include the IEEE Computer Society Certified Software Development Professional Program and the Wireless Communications Engineering Technology Certification Program from the IEEE Communications Society. IEEE Pre-University Programs connect engineers and educators. The Pre-University Teacher In-Service Program (TISP) for Sections features IEEE volunteers developing and presenting technical subject matter to pre-university educators in a professional development setting. Tryengineering.org is a Web site for engineering and engineering education for counselors, teachers, parents and students. It is a joint project of IEEE, IBM and the New York Hall of Science. IEEE also is responsible for carrying out the accreditation process for U.S engineering and engineering technology programs. IEEE also participates in international accreditation activities. 13
