Recruiting, selecting and training for success

LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THIS LESSON Outline the key stages and processes involved in a recruitment process. Understand why McDonald’s places high emphasis on its people and the recruitment process. Know that McDonald’s is committed to training its employees.

INTRODUCTION McDonald's employs on a large scale. The reputation of any business ultimately depends on the quality of its products. High quality products need high quality people to create, design, produce and deliver them. For any business an ability to recruit, train and retain high quality staff is particularly vital.

RECRUITMENT Under McDonald's each individual restaurant is responsible for filling hourly-paid positions. The manager selects applicants to interview. The applicant then attends a first stage interview and is offered "On Job Experience" (OJE). This is a 2-day assessment in a restaurant. Successful completion at OJE will lead to a final interview, after which the manager decides whether or not to hire the applicant

TRAINING McDonald's provides a full training programme which includes: The Welcome Meeting. A development programme. Ongoing training. This goes towards an appraisal grade.

Managers can also have the chance to work in the regional office. The Management Development Curriculum is aimed at people over 21 who have degrees or some management background. There are four key programmes: Running a shift. Running systems. Being a restaurant leader. Team building, communication, and decision making. Being a business leader. Managers can also have the chance to work in the regional office.

CONCLUSION McDonald's believes that the success of the Company and the restaurants hinges on the people it employs. It is therefore careful to recruit and train the best.
