An Introduction to Forces ICP

Aristotle (384 – 322 B.C.) Greek philosopher, scientist, educator First to really systematize existing knowledge He made observations and collected/organized all existing knowledge (some info was wrong and took centuries to disprove, like the sun travels around the Earth – which became part of church doctrine)

Copernicus (1474 – 1543) Polish astronomer that was the first to say that the Earth and other planets revolve around the sun = heliocentric model On the Revolutions, his book explaining the heliocentric model of the solar system, was printed and presented to him on his deathbed, on May 24, 1543

Galileo Galilei (1564 – 1642) Built first telescopes First to discover mountains on the moon and the moons of Jupiter Support Copernican theory of solar system – as a result was persecuted by Catholic Church and made to recant

Newton, Sir Isaac (1642 – 1727) He’s the man! Invented Calculus, studied light: published Optiks Was knighted in 1705 and is buried in Westminster Abbey Laws of Motion

Albert Einstein E = mc2 Theory of Relativity Theorized that there’s a unifying theory of the 4 known forces

Intro to Forces – 4 known Electromagnetism Gravity Strong Nuclear Force (holds protons and neutrons together) Weak Nuclear Force (responsible for radioactive decay)

FORCE In simplest terms, a force is a push or a pull Measured in Newtons (N)

NET FORCE Net force is the summation of all the forces acting on an object
