THE GREAT DEPRESSION IN THE UNITED STATES: 1929 to 1939

The Bonus Army in Washington DC Many veterans, whom had not been paid their compensation for WWI, marched to Washington, D.C. to demand their entire bonus. The “Bonus Expeditionary Force” put up unsanitary camps and shacks in vacant lots, creating health hazards and annoyance. Riots followed after troops came in to intervene and many people died. Hoover falsely charged that the force was led by riffraff and reds (communists), and the American opinion turned even more against him.

President Roosevelt and the New Deal Emergency Banking Act: stabilized large banks, took the dollar off the gold standard, and gave the Federal Reserve Bank more powers Agricultural Adjustment Agency (AAA): raised farm prices, lent money to farmers, paid farmers to let their land lay fallow, and slaughtered 6 million pigs Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC): insured individual bank deposits up to $2,500 and helped to stabilize and rebuild the banking system National Recovery Administration (NRA): worked to end wage deflation through a minimum wage, child labor and eliminate price fixing

President Roosevelt and the New Deal (cont.) Federal Emergency Relief Agency (FERA): granted funds to state and local governments and created 20 millions jobs Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA): brought power and flood relief to the Tennessee River region Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC): offered temporary employment to young men Works Progress Administration (WPA): created projects for writers, musicians, artists, and thespians and recorded and interview over 2,000 former slaves

ORGANIZE, THEN TURN AND TALK First, put each part of the New Deal in order from what you perceived to be the most successful to the least successful Then, turn to whomever is sitting across from you and share with each other your reasoning for each ranking
