Can we survive without a GURU?

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਘੋਰੁ ਅੰਧਾਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਮਝ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ Without the Guru, there is utter darkness; without the Guru, understanding does not come. ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਸਿਧਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ Without the Guru, there is no intuitive awareness or success; without the Guru, there is no liberation. ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਰੁ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ॥ So make Him your Guru, and contemplate the Truth; make Him your Guru, O my mind. ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰੁ ਸਬਦ ਸਪੁੰਨ ਅਘਨ ਕਟਹਿ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੇ ॥ Make Him your Guru, who is embellished and exalted in the Word of the Shabad; all your sins shall be washed away. ਗੁਰੁ ਨਯਣਿ ਬਯਣਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿ ਕਵਿ ਨਲ੍ ਕਹਿ ॥ So speaks NALL the poet: with your eyes, make Him your Guru; with the words you speak, make Him your Guru, your True Guru. ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਨ ਦੇਖਿਅਉ ਨਹੁ ਕੀਅਉ ਤੇ ਅਕਯਥ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਮਹਿ ॥੪॥੮॥ Those who have not seen the Guru, who have not made Him their Guru, are useless in this world. ||4||8|| Bhatt Nal in Svaiyay Mehl 5 on Pannaa 1399

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ Without the Guru, love does not well up, and the filth of egotism does not depart. Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Siree Raag on Ang 60 ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭੁਲੈ ਭੁਲਾਈਐ ਭੂਲੀ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਕਾਇ ॥ The self-willed manmukhs wander around, deluded and deceived. They find no place of rest. ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਦਿਖਾਵਈ ਅੰਧੀ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ Without the Guru, no one is shown the Way. Like the blind, they continue coming and going. ਗਿਆਨ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇਆ ਠਗਿਆ ਮੁਠਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ Having lost the treasure of spiritual wisdom, they depart, defrauded and plundered. ||1|| ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੋਹੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਸਭਿ ਥਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥ Without the True Guru, emotional attachment is not broken. ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ Without the Guru, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is not found, and the Naam is not obtained Guru Amar Daas Ji in Siree Raag on Ang 30 ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ Those who have not met the Primal Being, the True Guru, are most unfortunate, and are subject to death. ਓਇ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਿਸਟਾ ਕਰਿ ਵਿਕਰਾਲ ॥ They wander in reincarnation over and over again, as the most disgusting maggots in manure. ਓਨਾ ਪਾਸਿ ਦੁਆਸਿ ਨ ਭਿਟੀਐ ਜਿਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਚੰਡਾਲ ॥੩॥ Do not meet with, or even approach those people, whose hearts are filled with horrible anger. ||3|| Guru Raam Daas Ji in Siree Raag on Ang 40 ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥੨॥ Without the Guru, no one obtains liberation; see, and reflect upon this in your mind. ||2|| Guru Arjan Dev Ji in Raag Gujri on Ang 495

ਬਹੁਤ ਜਨਮ ਬਿਛੁਰੇ ਥੇ ਮਾਧਉ ਇਹੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੇ ਲੇਖੇ ॥ For so many incarnations, I have been separated from You, Lord; I dedicate this life to You. Bhagat Ravi Daas Ji in Raag Dhanaasree on Ang 694 ਸੁਣਿ ਨਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀਉ ਏਕਲੜੀ ਬਨ ਮਾਹੇ ॥ Hear me, O my Dear Husband God - I am all alone in the wilderness. ਕਿਉ ਧੀਰੈਗੀ ਨਾਹ ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੇ ॥ How can I find comfort without You, O my Carefree Husband God? Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Raag Gauree on Pannaa 243 ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਕਰਿ ॥ When your soul is feeling sad, offer your prayers to the Guru. ਛੋਡਿ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਸਗਲ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਧਰਿ ॥ Renounce all your cleverness, and dedicate your mind and body to Him. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖ ਕੀ ਕਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ॥ The True Guru cherishes His Sikh. ਸੇਵਕ ਕਉ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲ ॥ The Guru is always merciful to His servant. ਸਿਖ ਕੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਲੁ ਹਿਰੈ ॥ The Guru washes away the filth of the evil intellect of His Sikh. ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਰੈ ॥ Through the Guru's Teachings, he chants the Lord's Name. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖ ਕੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟੈ ॥ The True Guru cuts away the bonds of His Sikh. ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਿਖੁ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਹਾਟੈ ॥ The Sikh of the Guru abstains from evil deeds. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖ ਕਉ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਦੇਇ ॥ The True Guru gives His Sikh the wealth of the Naam. ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਿਖੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹੇ ॥ The Sikh of the Guru is very fortunate. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖ ਕਾ ਹਲਤੁ ਪਲਤੁ ਸਵਾਰੈ ॥ The True Guru arranges this world and the next for His Sikh. ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖ ਕਉ ਜੀਅ ਨਾਲਿ ਸਮਾਰੈ ॥੧॥ O Nanak, with the fullness of His heart, the True Guru mends His Sikh. ||1|| Guru Arjan Dev Ji in Raag Gauree on Ang 286
