Figure Cyclical Mycoplasma pneumoniae activities in the community as shown by laboratory reports of infection from 1975 to 2009 The arrows in the enlarged chart from 2004–09 mark the symptom onset dates of encephalitis cases associated with serological evidence of recent M pneumoniae infection. The Health Protection Agency causes of encephalitis study started recruitment from the southwest of England in October, 2005; institutions in London recruited from the start of 2006; the northwest of England started to recruit from November, 2006. Green arrows=cases diagnosed before recruitment started. Black arrows=cases recruited into the study, but were non-acute disseminated encephalomyelitis and mycoplasma as cause was considered possible only. Red arrows=mycoplasma-associated acute disseminated encephalomyelitis cases recruited into the study and included in the report. Blue bar=duration of the UK Health Protection Agency encephalitis study, staged start between October, 2005, and November, 2006, for 2 years.
