The Health Protection Agency causes of encephalitis study started recruitment from the southwest of England in October, 2005; institutions in London recruited from the start of 2006; the northwest of England started to recruit from November, 2006. Green arrows=cases diagnosed before recruitment started. Black arrows=cases recruited into the study, but were non-acute disseminated encephalomyelitis and mycoplasma as cause was considered possible only.
