March 20, 2017 World Literature & Composition 2 Mr. Thomas

Today’s Essential Questions/ Learning Objectives What are the rules for using colons? Why is it important for literature to reflect the perspective of “the other”? Students will seek patterns for understanding the rules for using colons. 2. Students will identify examples in their choice novels of the inclusion of diverse perspectives and reflect on the impact of those perspectives.

Today’s Agenda Colon Rules 2. Book Circle #1 or #2, Finish Seminar Notes, or Reading Time

Colons My chores include all of the following: dusting, vacuuming, and taking out the trash. Shakespeare wrote the following plays: Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet, and Macbeth. John had all of the ingredients he needed to cook dinner: flour, butter, noodles, shrimp, and vegetables.

Colon Rules Use a colon to indicate that a list will follow an independent clause or after the words “the following” or “the following items.” Do NOT use a colon before a list if the list is attached to a dependent clause INCORRECT: My favorite bands are: Radiohead, Bright Eyes, and Arcade Fire. CORRECT: My favorite bands include the following: Radiohead, Bright Eyes, and Arcade Fire.

Colons A book reviewer pointed out how Henry James’s view of the United States is embodied in his characters: “The innocence of a young America is reflected in the almost foolish innocence with which James’s American characters make decisions in Europe.” The editor points out why A Tale of Two Cities is unique among Dickens’s novels: “It is the one work in the whole series that fully merits the title of a ‘historical’ novel.”

Colon Rules Colons should be used instead of a comma to set off quotes when the lead-in to the quote is an independent clause.

Colons I would describe John with one word: snob. There was only one thing left to do: finish what we started. The poem is built around a memorable image: snow.

Colon Rules You can use a colon to emphasize an explanation that follows an independent clause.

Colons It is 8:16. Practice starts at 4:30. Please begin with Genesis 10:29. The pastor read Matthew 14:1-15.

Colon Rules Use a colon between the hour and minute when writing a time. Use a colon between the chapter and verse when referencing the Bible.

Book Circles Week #2 Write your answers to the following prompts: Which diverse perspectives are included in your choice novel? What have you learned from the inclusion of this perspective that you did not previously know or had not considered before? How does considering this perspective teach you about life and/or how to behave toward others? If you finish early, you may work on late work or read your choice novel.
