HOMEWORK

Show My Homework

2025 Plan – ‘all homework is purposeful, inclusive, quality-assured, and rooted in study skills’. Embedding [learning] These homeworks will be set regularly, according to a timetable decided within Curriculum Areas. Extended Practice [applying something taught in class in a new context] These homeworks will be set less frequently. They will be set at the same time so that all students will complete an ‘Extension Practice’ homework in the same week. They will be timetabled so that students aren’t overwhelmed with lots of ‘Extension Practice’ homework at the same time.

Set deadlines with at least 7 days if possible. Extended Practice. Weeks Dates Year 7 1    No hwk at all set 2-3 September 10th- September 21st English Geography 4-5 September 24th- October 5th Science RE 6-7 October 8th- October19th MFL Drama Set deadlines with at least 7 days if possible.

READING

‘11 to 16 year-olds who read for pleasure do better at their GCSEs.’ Reading ‘11 to 16 year-olds who read for pleasure do better at their GCSEs.’ (2014 research, Institute of Education)

Reading ‘Reading for 20 minutes every day has a greater impact on achievement than paying for a weekly 1-hour session with an English tutor.’ (2015 research, Institute of Education)

Reading ‘Parents are the most important reading role models for 11-16 year olds.’ (National Literacy Trust, April 2015)

Some do’s … Acknowledge their maturing interests. Many of our Year 7s are stuck in a rut of ‘shallow reading’. Reading

A student’s reading journey at Marple Hall School Year 7 Year 8 Year 9 Extracts from Dickens Poetry Non-fiction articles Media texts Extracts from Shakespeare

Reading age = 9.5 [Year 4-5] Reading age = 9 [Year 4] Reading age = 9.3 [Year 4]

New examinations: English Language Paper 1

New examinations: English Language Paper 1 A Reading Age of 11 removes the blanked out vocabulary.

Some more do’s … Value different kinds of reading. Reading

Reading Some more do’s … Re-introduce a bedtime reading slot (!) or ensure that reading happens earlier in the evening, before ‘gadget time’. Listen to them read. It is still a valuable thing to do. Consider investing in a Kindle Paperwhite for a reluctant reader. Visit a bookshop or a library with your child and get them to choose a book from our reading list [see website]. Read the same book that they are reading. Reading

A final do … Support us with whole-school reading projects. Reading
