Types of Matter- 2 types: I. Substances : uniform composition 1. Element : Made of a single type of atom, cannot be broken down further by chemical means, smallest particle that contains the chemical and physical properties of a type of atom [Ex: Silver (Ag), Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H)] 2. Compound: Made of 2 or more types of atoms, can be broken down into elements by chemical means [Ex: salt (NaCl), sugar, pure water, HCl / hydrochloric acid] II. Mixtures (of substances): Variable composition 1. Homogeneous :uniform composition (Ex: Salt water, stainless steel, tap water) 2. Heterogeneous: variable composition, has distinct phase separation (Ex: granite, chicken and noodle soup, mixed salad)

Ways of Separating Mixtures: 1. Filtration: Separation of solid or liquid particles based on size through a membrane or filter (filtering coffee or pasta with a colander) 2. Distillation: Used for separating homogeneous compounds in liquid mixtures based on differing boiling points of individual components (Petroleum and alcohol manufacture) 3. Crystalization: Using a super saturated solution to separate one component as an extremely pure solid in crystal form (Sugar/rock candy) 4. Chromatography: A way to separate a mixture of solid or gas particles dissolved in a liquid based on differing mobilities of individual particles (Pigments of a black sharpie pen) 5. Sublimation: A way to separate a mixture of solid by heat causing one to be removed as a gas [ex: a mixture of ice and dry ice (solid CO2)] 6.Evaporation: Removal of all liquid from a mixture ( Ex. salt from sea water)
