Purchase of authorized treatments Actions: Purchase of bee queens Purchase of swarm Purchase of bee families
Measures & Actions First Program 2008 – 2010 determined the authorities, after consultations with the beekeeping associations, to include the measure “control of varroasis” in the Romanian National Apiculture Programme First Program 2008 – 2010 Objective – a healthy bee population Control of varroasis Controlling Varroa was considered essential for a successful beekeeping The spread of varroasis in the last decade The problems which this disease may cause to honey production The fact that it cannot be completely eradicated The high number of beekeepers (more than 36.000 in 2007) The traditional way of beekeeping – transhumance
Measures & Actions First Program 2008 – 2010 Objective – support for replacing and increasing the bee colonies with high quality biological material. Restocking of hives Restocking of hives in Romania Increasing the productivity of bee families Improving the biodiversity by pollination Improving the apiaries health Decreasing the use of treatments by using strong and healthy families

Challenges Results & Challenges Lack of experience regarding National Apiculture programme for beekeepers Reluctant beekeepers to the EU programmes Insufficient funds Recruiting young beekeepers to the sector New needs for the beekeepers Impossibility to have research programs (three year program, but implementation in full within the financial year concerned!) Providing adequate funding for honey bee research measures
