Leading with a Growth Mindset Learning Language Feedback Motivation Change

Language is Culture Richard Elmore (Instructional Rounds 2008) points out that the language we use shapes the culture of the institution. What do people say to you? What do you say to others? What do you say to yourself?

Fixed Mindset Communication Growth Mindset Communication Re-framing Language Fixed Mindset Communication Growth Mindset Communication I appreciate that you put effort into everything you do. Let’s run this by our leadership group to survey where staff might be on this Our staff is committed to continuous improvement Let’s see how their success can inspire us. Everything you do is brilliant It’s not the right time to bring this to our site We have a very intelligent staff Our site/students/situation is different

Fixed Mindset Self-Talk Growth Mindset Self-Talk Re-framing Language Fixed Mindset Self-Talk Growth Mindset Self-Talk “They would never consider me” “I will look for an opportunity to showcase my skills” “I am always messing that up” “I need a new strategy for this situation” “Why can’t I stop doing that?” “If I ask for some support, I can change my response/behavior/etc.” “I can’t do this anymore” “I need help, or I need to make some choices” “That is not my style” “It will take some practice to learn that!”

Motivation Carrots and sticks do (not) work for very long Autonomy is extremely important to human beings Mastery requires engagement (Flow) Humans seek purpose (think: purpose maximization)

How do we motivate people? Leadership 1.0: Have the biggest muscles, weapons, army, treasure chest Leadership 2.0: have an action plan, measures, stipends, and performance review Leadership 3.0: Know HOW to GROW your people

Can YOU help people change their habits, thinking, and beliefs? Every change process must deal with these facts about humans: We have a rational brain (the “Rider”) We have an emotional brain (the “Elephant”) We work and live in an environment (our “Path”)

What does this mean for leaders?

Think-Pair-Table Share Consider a plan/initiative you have seen implemented at a school. Look at it through the lens of Switch. Did the implementation include those elements? How successful was/is it?

Love what you do (people can tell) Hugh Macleod www.gapingvoid.com

What do you love about your vocation?

The journey IS the destination

Become a school… A leader can “weather the storms” because s/he has a vision, a purpose, and knows that effort and time are essential ingredients to the journey.

How close is YOUR building How close is YOUR building? {to being the kind of place you want YOUR kids to be}
