Figure 1 Neuronal coalitions for swimming and crawling. (A,B) Phase maps for swimming and crawling for all imaged neurons on the dorsal (A) and ventral (B) surface of a midbody leech ganglion. Colored neurons are coherent with the crawling (left) or swimming (right) motor patterns and the phase indicated by the color wheel. Crawling consists of alternating whole body contractions and elongations while swimming consists of alternating dorsal and ventral contractions. Gray cells are not coherent with either motor pattern.
