Expectations and Goals Academic Time management Increasing time spent studying (3 hours) Decreasing distractions Having an ATAR goal. Incremental improvement.
Academics: What can we do ? Help them manage their time. Have them display their study timetables in a visible area so that you know when they should be studying but also when they are taking a break. It’s ok to have high expectations, but the boys need to know it’s also okay to fail. Don’t add to the pressure. “What mark did you get?” vs “What are you learning in Maths?”
Academics Continued… Put your sons in contact with people who may be working in fields they are interested in. Help them internalise demands, and internalise their own motivation.
Expectations and Goals Formational How do we treat the females in our life? Manhood, what society tells us is a man vs what it really means. Preparing for working life Language Behaviour Personal Presentation
What can we do? Make the most of opportunities to pass on life lessons. Don’t forget boys need one on one time, even if they may not say much. Relate school rules and household rules to the applications of it in life after school. What would employers expect from them?
Expectations and Goals Spiritual Temperence & Fortitude. Prayer Practice of the Faith.
What we can do? Prayer as a family. Help boys build up walls around their faith. Be aware that this is a critical time as they approach leaving school.
Assessment Booklets Assessment booklets have approximate dates. Also includes assessment policy and procedures for misadventure and malpractice. Encourage them to plan for the whole year.
Study At School & Free Periods Boys need a constant message from parents and teachers about making the most of their free time. For some students studying at home is quite difficult and time at school is increasingly valuable.
Computers & Technology Necessary for most assignments Monitor and limit their access Have compters in a well trafficked area of the house. They can be huge time waster and distraction if they don’t learn how to manage their own usage.
