Origin Islam began with nomadic traders who lived on the Arabian Peninsula It was spread in Africa via trans-Saharan trade by traders called Berbers Also spread by military conquest It spread to West Africa, Spain, and parts of Europe and Asia

Basic Principles Prophet - one who declares publicly a message that one believes has come from God or a god. In Islam the prophet is Mohammed Allah is the name of God in Islam Abraham, Jesus and Moses are also profits in Islam The holy book is called the Qur’an

The 5 Pillars of Islam Faith - There is only one God, Allah and Mohammed is his prophet. Prayer - Pray five times a day in the direction of Mecca Fasting- go w/out food or drink Must fast from sunup to sundown during Ramadan Alms - donation to charity. Make yearly alms called a Zakat to the needy. Pilgrimage-journey to a holy place Muslims make a pilgrimage to Mecca

Major Branches of Islam Sunni-Believe leaders of Islam do not have to be related to Mohammed Shia-(shiite) Believe leaders of Islam must be related to Mohammed. Muslims do not believe in the separation of church and state
