Why Are We Here? ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS Change & transition is a part of life Learning how to manage change & transition is a skill necessary for healthy living Understanding the stages and emotions associated with change & transition helps to prepare you for adapting positively All family members need extra care and attention during times of change & transition ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS How do I manage change & transition? How do I help others to manage change & transition? What are family strategies for adapting to change & transition? How do we as a family find ways to give each other extra support during times of change & transition?

What do Transitions look like? Moving Saying Farewell Changing Homes Changing Jobs Changing Schools/Grade Levels Changes in the Family System (births, divorce, separations, graduations) Losses (pets, friends, family members) Aging & Life Stages (infant, toddler, childhood, teens, young adult, middle age, etc.)

Strategies for a smooth transition Continue family routines and create new ones Encourage kids to get involved in ASA (after school activities) and playdates Get involved here at TIS Keep in touch with old friends in the midst of making new ones Share your experiences- talk about your own transition Validate feelings Self-care!!!! Especially for our new families: Create a bucket list of things to do/see in Uzbekistan Take initiative to explore the area and meet new people

Reminders: Take care of your own emotional health Be aware of the messages you are sending Celebrate successes (even if they seem small) Stay involved in your child’s life Give space/time to mourn and grieve Be available to listen to your child and their experiences Intercede when necessary Be knowledgeable about school structure and culture Encourage them to get involved in activities and organizations Remind them that friendships take time Set bedtimes to ensure an adequate amount of sleep (9-12 hours/night) Monitor learning habits
