POP QUIZ!

Review of Verb Tenses Infinitive- to live –What is the past tense form of the verb? –What is the present tense form of the verb? –What is the future tense form of the verb? Infinitive- to see –What is the past tense form of the verb? –What is the present tense form of the verb? –What is the future tense form of the verb?

Conjugation of Verb Forms: To conjugate means to change When we conjugate a verb, we change the verb form for each possible subject. This usually happens in a chart. It sounds a lot more confusing than it actually is!

Conjugation of Verb Forms--- Infinitive-Base Form Makes the Present Tense I start the race quickly. You start the race quickly. She starts the race quickly. We start the race quickly. You start the race quickly. They start the race quickly. to start

Conjugation of Verb Forms--- Past Tense Form Makes the Past Tense I ordered a lobster dinner at the restaurant. You ordered a lobster dinner at the restaurant. He ordered a lobster dinner at the restaurant. We ordered a lobster dinner at the restaurant. You ordered a lobster dinner at the restaurant. They ordered a lobster dinner at the restaurant. to order

Will + Infinitive–Base Form Provides the Future Tense I will (shall) jump far today. You will jump far today. He will jump far today. We will (shall) jump far today. You will jump far today. They will jump far today. to jump

You are the teacher… Now think of a verb. It can be regular or irregular. Write the infinitive at the top of your chart. Decide what tense the verb should be conjugated in. Trade with a partner and fill in their chart. Conjugate the verb in the _________ tense. When your partner returns your paper, check their answers! singularplural IWe You He/She/ItThey

Word Usage- lay and lie lay = to put or place something down Please lay the charts on the table. lie = to recline or be in position Layers of dust lie on the moon.

Tenses of lay and lie… Just a bit confusing! to lie Past- lay Present- lie, lies Future- will lie to lay Past- laid Present- lay, lays Future- will lay

Practice! In pairs, decide which word fills in the blank. Be sure to use the proper conjugation of the verb. lay (to put or to place) or lie (to recline or to be positioned) 1.I ______ the notebooks on the ground beside me. 2.I can _____ on the ground for hours, looking at the sky. 3.Relative to stars, planets do not always _____ in the same place. 4.All winter, the seed ______ on the ground. 5.We _______ seed in the yard for wild birds.
