THE REFORMATION REVIEW Lessons Learned From Old Testament: Solomon leads Israel into idolatry Rehoboam rejects wise counsel Jeroboam changes every aspect of God’s Law Josiah restores every aspect of God’s Law New Testament church established A.D. 33 Departure from The Faith begins during Apostolic Age Changes take place for 1200+ years in Organization, Worship, and Doctrine.

THE REFORMATION The Albigenses (1170): Opposed tradition as authority and doctrines of purgatory & image worship. Believed in N.T. authority. They were annihilated by Pope Innocent III. The Waldensians (late 12th Century): Appealed to the Scriptures in opposition of Roman Catholic Church. Noted for their zeal for purity of life. From severe persecution were forced into hiding. John Wycliffe (1324-1384): Opposed authority of the Pope, transubstantiation, & auricular confessions. 1st known to have translated Bible into English.

THE REFORMATION John Huss (1369-1415): Disciple of Wycliffe, exalted Scripture above tradition, opposed tyranny of clergy & sale of indulgences. He was burned to death. John Wessel (1420-1498): A Precursor to Martin Luther in that he avowed much of what Luther would later believe. Jerome Savonarola (1452-1498): Fought Papal authority & immorality of clergy. He was burned to death.

THE REFORMATION Age of Enlightenment brought people out of bigotry, ignorance, and superstition. Gutenberg’s printing press (1455) made available the Bible to the masses. Martin Luther (1483-1546): discovered many errors in Catholic Church and detailed these in writing and debated the Catholics openly. John Calvin (1509-1564): Embraced the reformation started by Luther and set out his 5 main points in his “Institutes of the Christian Religion.

THE REFORMATION John Knox (1505-1572): Converted to protestantism and preached doctrines of Calvin. He organized and wrote the articles of faith for what would become the Presbyterian Church. Ulrich Zwingli (1484-1531): Follower of Luther but sought to restore primitive apostolic teachings of 1st century. Henry VIII (1491-1547): King of England, devout Catholic until he wanted a divorce in order to marry a much younger woman. After he was excommunicated from the Catholic church he and Parliament started the Church of England (aka Episcopal Church).

THE REFORMATION John Wesley (1703-1791): Started a religious club with his brother Charles while at Oxford Univ. called “Holy Club” or “Methodist Club” where they practiced methodical religious exercises. He was a Church of England priest but learned and adopted new religious thoughts after studying with German Moravian men. These new doctrines led to the formation of the Methodist Church.
