POSITIVE COACHING SCOTLAND DEFINING SUCCESS IN A MASTERY ENVIRONMENT Within a mastery coaching environment, everyone wants to win.   There is nothing wrong with wanting to win, however mastery coaches understand that winning is not the most important aspect of youth sport – developing the young person physically, psychologically and socially is. SMALL PICTURE Young people should be taught that striving to achieve their personal best is a vital life lesson that can be taught through sport. Mastery coaches should teach young people that striving to be successful is a positive trait – however this is very short term, not always in their control and doesn’t always improve them as athletes and as people BIG PICTURE The big picture in a mastery coaching environment it to develop the person and the athlete – where a mastery coach has a positive impact not only on the young person’s sporting ability, but also their life. A mastery coach is one that recognises both the small and the big picture where the key focus is on winning, but also: Fun and enjoyment Achievement Health Improvement Learning Like skills Long term development Rate this tool!
