OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY WHY?

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY LEGISLATION Occupational Health & Safety Act No 85 of 1993 Section 8 “Every employer shall provide and maintain, as far as reasonably practicable, a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health of his employees”

OHS LEGISLATIVE REQUIREMENTS Act/Bylaws/Policy/ Operational need Requirements Compliant OHS Act Section 17 & 18 Appointed designated Health & Safety representatives Floor Marshall First Aider Fire Marshall Emergency Controller Recordkeeping OHS Act Section 19 & 20 OHS Committee meet at least once a quarter Minutes to be recorded Municipal Bylaws 2 x evacuation drills (planned & unplanned)

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY Where does OHS start?

DUTIES OF EMPLOYEES Every employee shall: Take care of his/her health and safety as well as of others affected by his/her activities Cooperate with department to ensure any requirement imposed by the OHASA committee is complied with Carryout lawful order given by OHASA representatives Reports any situation that is unsafe to their representative Reports to the Health & Safety representative if he/she’s involved in an accident Wear prescribed safety equipment when required.

DUTIES OF EMPLOYER Adhere to duties imposed by the committee( as set out in section 8 of OHASA act) Provide maintenance of systems Take steps to eliminate or mitigate hazards & risks Provide information training and instructions Enforce measures as necessary Ensure that persons other than those employed directly affected by physical activities of the department are safe

EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCESS Emergency is announced and alarm activated On each floor staff/residents must wait for floor marshal's instructions or if no floor marshal is available proceed to the next step Staff/residents must take belongings that are in front of them ONLY and must proceed to the escape Door Staff /residents must proceed to the assembly point i.e open marked space Staff must remain in the assembly point until all the roll call is done & staff/residents is officially dispersed.

DSD OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY COMMITTEE DSD committee was established in 2010. The head of the committee is Ms Annemie Van Reenen The committee is made up of: 16.2 appointee (the head of the committee) Representatives chosen from each Region, Head Office and CYCC A representatives from Department of Community Safety The DSD committee has established a policy that provides guidelines to all employees with regards to their health and safety in the workplace.
