Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Shooting John Wayne: T aming Big John: I found the big guy on a wall of a john in My Sisters Place Restaurant in Grand Marais, Minnesota. John looked ready to be shot. So I did using my Sony H1, an early generation compact digital super-zoom. The room was small and dimly lit making it difficult to shoot. That made it a perfect situation for using the camera flash. The artwork was covered with glass. To avoid flash glare on the glass, I moved off to the right side. That resulted in distorting the shape of the art work as seen in the example.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Shooting John Wayne: R equirements: When copying an art work, the primary concern is to achieve an accurate reproduction in brightness, tonal range, color, and shape. Most snap shooters stand directly in front of an art work and use both the zoom lens set on wide and the flash. The resulting image is often misshapen with barrel (bowed out) and perspective distortion and with a flash glare on the artwork. To avoid the usual pitfalls, I made decisions described in both the previous and next slide.

But, my skewed shooting angle introduced natural perspective distortion. I accepted the distortion since thats fixable in Photoshop. Flash-glare would have been nearly impossible to fix.

Then it was processed using Levels, Brightness/Contrast, and Color layer adjustments. Use the keyboard up and down arrow keys to compare this fixed version with the previous camera original.
