What is Inclusive Education? Opertti et. al (2009; 212) Access and participation within the curriculum for all... Consideration of the diversity of the learning, which should include the learner’s social and cultural background Identification and removal of potential barriers that can reduce success Implementation of relevant policies to include those who are marginalized, excluded or underachieving

The Reality

The Reality Despite decades of calls for inclusivity, “No country has yet succeeded in constructing a school system that lives up to the ideals and intentions of inclusion, as defined by different international organizations” (Haug 2017).

Possible Pathway: Inclusive Pedagogy Inclusive pedagogy is an ideological shift from the traditional approaches that seek to support of only those who experience difficulties in learning. The aim of inclusive pedagogy is to provide equal opportunities for all students with the learning environment (Florina 2015 & Loughan 2015).

Critical Reflective Reflexive Practice Purposeful Change Schön (1983) postulates that reflection is an imperative part of change in behaviour... reflection stage could lead to the modification of behaviour which would allow for “a particular course of action” (p.62) The engagement in reflection does not guarantee that a change of behaviours... (Pollner, 1991 and Clifford 1986)

Conceptualizing Critical Reflective Reflexive Inclusive Pedagogy Framework (CRRIP), Jowallah (2018) Transformation Practice Commitment to Inclusive Pedagogy Engagement in Critical Reflection Engagement in Critical Reflexive Practice

Becoming Inclusive M.C. Santana

Becoming Inclusive Ongoing effort! Student-based Eclectic learners Fast scrollers - not always readers Discussions Written, oral and video Example: Student performing poorly with written assignments, given opportunity to create video

Becoming Inclusive Content by students Wiki Example: Ongoing timeline Meeting students where they are at Pronouns Not “preferred” since it is a reality not a choice for them Given name vs. chosen name Using table name tags in F2F classes

Challenges Using different voices as sources Case Studies Authors, textbooks TED talks Blogs Questions to ponder prior to watching multimedia Not a quiz but still part of assessment Keeping with current issues Intersectionalities #MeToo BlackLivesMatter Social Class Ageism

Innovative Ways of Teaching Service Learning Online Thinking Globally and Acting Locally Engaging in meaningful ways through Social Media Final Module Created by students (depending on class) highly intellectual and driven class is the best to select for this project Students divide the labor between creating objectives, selecting readings and resources and even guest speakers online Wellness for students Burnout as activists Mental health Shorter Audiovisuals Documentaries are assigned and specific segments are encouraged Use Kanopy (streaming through Webcourses and library)
