Aunt Alexandra Aunt Alexandra is a woman who feels superior to others because of her ancestry, and doesn’t like to hear otherwise. After her arrival at Scout’s house, it is pointed out that Aunt Alexandra “never let a chance escape her to point out the shortcomings of other tribal groups to the greater glory of our own.”(p.172) By tribal groups, she means families. This shows she puts her family above others. Also, Alexandra has the opinion that “the longer a family had been squatting on a piece of land the finer it was.” (p.173)
Alexandra Of course she was knowledgeable of the fact that the Finches were one of the oldest families in Maycomb, dating back to its founding, so in her estimation the Finches were the finest of all. One evening after Alexandra bragged on Cousin Joshua, Jem replied, “Is this the cousin Joshua who was locked up for so long?” Then Jem elaborated for a little bit, but Aunt Alexandra cut him off, “standing stiff as a stork. ‘That’s all,’ she said. ‘We’ll see about this.’ ” (p.176-177). She became rigid with anger that Jem would ever repeat that story because it reflected badly on the family. She’d take it up with Atticus for sharing negative anecdotes with the children.
Alexandra Conclusion Though Aunt Alexandra actively tries to maintain her superiority, Jem and Scout can generally see right through her fallacies. (The conclusion should rephrase your topic sentence in a new and refreshing way. Do not repeat the topic.)
