Cause The herpes simplex virus is a contagious virus that can be passed from person to person through direct contact. The herpes simplex virus is a contagious virus that can be passed from person to person through direct contact. Eating from the same utensils Sharing lip balm kissing

Symptoms herpes type 1 causes sores around the mouth and lips (sometimes called fever blisters or cold sores). HSV-1 can cause genital herpes, but most cases of genital herpes are caused by herpes type 2.

Worst case scenario If an individual is experiencing an increased frequency and severity of herpes outbreaks, they should speak to their doctor about antiviral medication to help control their outbreaks and lessen their severity. Open sores can lead to an increased vulnerability to other infections, especially in people with suppressed immune systems.

Facts Cold sores on the mouth or face are caused by HSV-1 and are commonly transmitted to the genitals (causing genital herpes) through oral to genital sex. Up to 40% of genital herpes is caused by HSV-1 HSV-1 typically affects the mouth area. No, 80% of those with oral herpes do not know they have it, as they may have no or very mild herpes symptoms.
