PTP SOLUTIONS: Using PTP as a backup to GPS SALES MEETING 2018

WHAT IS PTP? Precise Time Protocol used to synchronize clocks throughout a network. The Grandmaster (GM) “reference clock” sends a series of time- stamped messages to slaves Slaves receive the messages, and eliminate the round-trip delay by synchronizing to the GM Frequency/Time-of-Day/Phase is recovered from the accurate time of day reference from the GM Transparent Clocks (TC) measures & adjusts the delay Boundary Clocks (BC) can receive PTP as a reference, while providing GM functionality downstream to other clients.

PTP: GNSS and PTP

PTP network

NTP vs. PTP NTP PTP V2 supports LANs and WANs Has been designed for public networks, can be used across WANs V2 supports LANs and WANs Single Grandmaster sends time to one or more slave clocks in a multicast mode NTP client regularly polls one or more NTP servers Built in redundancy thru multiple NTP servers V2 supports multiple clock sources running best master selection algorithm Software based and assumes symmetric networks. Non-deterministic delays contribute to timing inaccuracy Hardware based, supports assymmetric networks, APTS (assisted partial timing support) On path support non existent Not required, but available thru transparent and boundary clocks

Why PTP matters High accuracy time, phase and frequency transfer via Ethernet Saves $$$$ Synchronization uses same channels as data No additional cable for timing (i.e. twisted pair or coax) Common media type, Ethernet infrastructure No expensive GPS antennas

PTP deployment

PTP offering: OSA products 5401 Sync Plug product

Grandmaster, Boundary Clock, Slave Clocks 5401 Sync plug Grandmaster, Boundary Clock, Slave Clocks 5401 Syncplug Syncplug™ technology for highly accurate timing distribution with smallest footprint. Compatible with SFP electrical MSA Built-in GNSS receiver supporting fully-featured PRTC and IEEE 1588-2008 (PTP) grandmaster Easily plugs into hosting devices. No additional power or space is required Robust design with local Stratum 3E oscillator and Sync-E input; fallback in case of GNSS outage

OSA 5410/5420 “All in One”, cost effective Sync Toolbox Sync Delivery using 1588 v2 Telecom Slave/ Boundary/ Master Clocks/ GPS /GNSS / Sync E/ BITS Sync Assurance using Active/Passive probing and monitoring of Sync (Sync SLA, network PDV) Supports APTS, back up to GPS/GNSS

OSA 5410/5420 Built-in GNSS receiver enable PRTC/PRC & Grandmaster Clock functionalities Brings precise IEEE 1588v2 PTP frequency and phase synchronization to radio access networks Syncjack™ technology for timing distribution, monitoring and testing Extended holdover performance including high-end quartz and rubidium oscillator options Configurable to operate in Grandmaster, APTS, Boundary and Slave Clock modes

Syncjack technology and verifying PTP Software feature that measures and reports the status/state of the sync network Embedded in all ADVA Synchronization products Analogous to Performance Monitor and Bit Error Rate in traditional networks Unique Differentiator From Competition

PTP Network Probe Statistics and Results Packet Counters (arrived, lost) PD (Path Delay) – min, max, avg., forward only MPD (Mean Path Delay) – min, max, avg., both directions RPDV (Residual Path Delay Variation) – min, avg., both directions (based on observed Delay Floor); Current Value and Histogram Network Usability (based on G.8261.1 FPP); Current Value and Histogram
