National Anthems Learning Objectives: 1 – To understand the purpose of a National Anthem 2 – To reflect on how past history shapes our future 5mins – Pupils enter and settle. Take the register as they write down the title and learning objectives

Learning Outcomes By the end of the lesson… All students will be able to state one fact about the history of Mozambique Most students will be able to the importance of the start of the School day at the Maciene School Some students will be able to justify which event they think had the greatest impact on Mozambique’s history

Starter: God Save the Queen? God save our gracious Queen! Long live our noble Queen! God save the Queen! Send her victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us, God save the Queen. Thy choicest gifts in store On her be pleased to pour, Long may she reign. May she defend our laws, And give us ever cause, To sing with heart and voice, God save the Queen. 7mins – Pupils have 3mins in pairs to discuss these two questions before sharing their ideas with the class. Don’t allow these discussions to go on too long as the main focus of the lesson is the Mozambique national anthem. What does this National Anthem say about the United Kingdom? Do you agree with it?

Start of the School Day 8mins – Play this short clip to the students (3mins) and explain to them that this is how the school day begins in Maciene everyday. Compare and Contrast Read through the two anthems and answer the two questions below What is the difference between the two Mozambican anthems? What do you think happened in the run up to the change in 2002? 15mins – Give the pupils the sheet with the two anthems on it. Give them 5mins to read through it in silence and make notes around it based on the two questions. Then give them 5mins to discuss their thoughts in pairs before taking 5mins to share this as a class. FRELIMO is the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique who were largely responsible for Mozambique’s independence by initiating an armed conflict against the Portuguese colonial rule.

Mozambique History Colonialised by Portugal in 1500 Became independent in 1974 San hunters and gatherers settled their between 1st and 5th centuries Which of these events will have had the greatest effect on Mozambique history? 15mins – Pupils should look at the images and the events, considering the question in the red box. They should then attempt to write their own version of the Mozambique National Anthem based on the events and the two versions on the sheet. It should contain 2 verses and a chorus. A cyclone in 2000 killed hundreds and devastated the infrastructure Civil War from 1977 to 1992

Share your National Anthems with the class Plenary Share your National Anthems with the class Reflection: What are the events that have shaped your life? If you had a National Anthem for your life what would it be like? 5mins – Select one or two good versions to share with the class before asking the pupils to pack up and stand behind their chairs. Before they leave ask them to consider the Reflection question as they go about their day.
