Presentation transcript:

Mrs. Nelson’s Kindergarten Classroom Mrs. Stephanie Nelson Meet the Teacher I’m so excited to be entering my 5th year of teaching! I would like to introduce myself, my name is Stephanie Nelson and I am pleased to be your child’s teacher this year at Lamar- Milledge Elementary School. I obtained my Specialist degree from Augusta University in 2017. I taught Pre-K for one year and this will be my 4th year teaching Kindergarten. Favorites: Drink: Sweet tea Color: pink Food: pizza Music: R&B Drop-off and Pick Up School starts at 7:30a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. Please have your child dropped off and picked up on time everyday. It is crucial to their learning. ~If you want your child to eat breakfast they will need to be dropped off at school before 7:30 a.m. The cafeteria opens at 7:00 a.m. Transportation is a very important topic. I need to know how you plan for your child to get to and from school everyday. If your child’s regular transportation method is going to change for any reason I must have that in writing. Legally, I cannot take your child’s word for it or allow a child to leave school through a verbal agreement with you. IT MUST BE PUT IN WRITING. Instructional Philosophy I believe our students are our future. Each of our students have the potential to bring something unique and special to the world. Teaching is an important and honorable occupation that demands commitment. There are miracles, learning, healing, laughter, sharing and love every day in my classroom. A teacher has the opportunity to impact student lives in a positive way.  Our classroom is a place where students feel important, respected, cared for and believed in. I am a teacher who makes it possible for her students to reach their full potential, ask questions, learn from their mistakes, give and receive feedback, create and try their best. In our classroom, real world problems are solved and each student believes that they can make a difference in this world. Together, we celebrate each other’s success and inspire each other to be the best person that we can be.   Mrs. Nelson’s Kindergarten Classroom I am anxious for our “team approach” concerning your child’s education. We all have the same goal – for your child to be happy,  challenged, comfortable, and secure at school. We need to work together in order for your child to reach maximum success. I am  asking that you please review things we have learned at school on a daily basis. Course Assessment Plan More Important Information Course Description Kindergarten is a time that children begin a lifetime of learning. It is a year for learning, growing, making friends, and a lot of fun too!  Our days are filled with stories, letters, phonics, numbers, writing, and many other activities and memories. What a pleasure it will be to have your child in my classroom. I have an exciting year planned full of opportunities for learning and growing. Your child will be studying about many aspects of life including; self, home, family, and community throughout the year, in addition to the Common core standards.    Major Course Goals Georgia’s standard’s for a child leaving kindergarten are high. We work on social skills, rules and singing songs. I know you will be fascinated when he/she learns how to write he/she’s first and last name, learn colors, upper and lowercase letters, letter sounds, vowels and their sounds, cvc words, sight words, rhyming, segmenting, identifying shapes and number 1-20, write numbers 1-20, count to 100 by 1s and 10s, and adding and subtracting. Don’t worry…I will be discussing all of these things with you many times throughout the school year. Again, please call if you have questions, comments, or concerns.   Course Assessment Plan Progression toward grade level standards will be assessed with student checklist and Gkids. Observations to check for understanding and “tickets out the door” will be used DAILY. The students will take a pre/post test for each unit that is taught. The student will be tested for reading readiness with DIBELS. The students will be assessed on grade level standards with iReady. Class Expectations Rule #1: Follow directions! Rule #2: Keep your hands to yourself! Rule #3: Be a good friend. Rule #4: Be a good listener! Rule #5: Raise your hand! Rule #7: Stay in your seat! Our classroom will use a clip chart behavior system. The system promotes positive behavior choices and encourages students to self-monitor their behavior. The students will begin the day on “ready to learn.” The students have the opportunity to move their clip up or down depending on their choices. Rewards/consequences are not given until the end of the day, when students are no longer able to move their clip. More information about our behavior system will be sent home separately. Communication Please join our class on remind.com by texting @7876ec to the number 8101. This can be used to communicate with me daily. EXTRA HELP: Daily interventions will be done with students that need extra academic support. More Important Information Major Projects & Instructional Activities Arthur/ Book study, All about me project, daily iReady lessons, independent activities, whole group participation, and reading grade level text. Attendance Students are expected to come to school EVERYDAY! We want all of our students at LME to be academically successful. Students will have to be present to learn the skills that they need. Homework & Grading PARENTS ARE ASKED TO ASSIST AND NOT COMPLETE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS FOR THEIR CHILD!!!!! Why should students do homework? It allows them to reinforce, review, and /or practice skills they have learned in class. It communicates to parents the important skills learned in class and allows them to become partners in their child’s education. Read with your child for at least 20 minutes NIGHTLY Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. Please return homework the next day in your child’s folder. A record is kept of all homework returned on time for each child. Make sure that your child’s name is on each homework assignment. Mastery is determined using a standards-based rubric that reflects the grades that students receive on their progress report and report card. The new report card for grades K-3 will include a grading scale (1-4).    1- Beginning Learner 2-Developing Learner 3-Proficient Learner 4-Distinguished Learner
