Micro-organisms & Into to Microscopes Taylor Hardy March 2014

Agenda Whole group instruction Fill in the Blanks Outcome: Assess effects of micro-organisms on past and present society, and contributions of science and technology to human understanding of micro-organisms. Whole group instruction Fill in the Blanks Protists Most Wanted- GAME! Intro to microscopes- discussion Intro to microscopes- VIDEO! Microscope Crossword

Animal Kingdoms

Micro-organisms Micro-organisms: they are so small they are invisible to the human eye, and you need a microscope to see them! Scientists classify them by structural characteristics (such as internal body systems and body structure) They are made of cells, respire, require energy to live, respond to stimuli, grow, reproduce, and excrete waste

Protist Kingdom Plant-like Animal-like Fungus-like With Pseudopods Cilia With Flagella

Characteristics Plant- like Animal- like Fungus-like Make their own food Produce lots of oxygen Singe-celled, multicellular, or live in colonies Live in fresh or salt water, in the soil, or in bark of trees Able to move Single-celled Eat other organisms Absorb their food from another organism Live in moist environments Reproduce by spores (tiny cells that can develop into an organism)

Animal-like (further info) With Cilia With Pseudopods With Flagella Cilia, the hair-like projections on the surface of some micro-organisms, are used for movement Flagella, long whip-like projections from the cell, are used for movement Pseudopods, are extensions that look like fingers, and are used for movement or to catch prey

Protists Most Wanted- Activity Instructions: I will break you into groups of 4-5 and you will get together with that group. Once in that group, you will work together and go through the stations. It does not matter which group you start at. When I say go you will walk and figure out which type of protist each criminal is. There are hints in the description. When the first group is done, they will sit down and raise their hand for me to see. No talking when you are finished! Rules: No running- only walking! No yelling- only whispering is allowed, you want to make sure your answer stays a secret to other groups! Breaking the rules will result in disqualification…

Intro to Microscopes What do you know about microscopes?

Parts of a microscope

Rules for using a Microscope Grab the microscope by the arm and base when moving it around. Make sure the stage clips are in place so the slide doesn’t move around when viewing. ALWAYS start with the smallest objective when examining a slide. When using the highest objective NEVER use the course adjustment because it may break the glass slide. When it is time to clean up, put the microscope back the way you found it- make sure the lowest objective is on so glass slides won’t break.
