W. E. Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words and Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament both agree that oracle (logion) is “a diminutive of logos (word) meaning a brief narrative, statement, a divine response or utterance”

Post-apostolic writers Ignatius (70-100 AD) quoted Christ and called His teachings oracles Clement (92-101 AD) called the holy scriptures oracles Polycarp (80-156 AD) referred to the sayings of the Lord as oracles.
