The Stage 9 positions
Upstage vs. downstage These terms come from Greek Theater. A Raked stage was used so that the audience could see every actor on the stage. The slope of the stage was like a hill. The bottom of the hill was closest to the audience. This was the DOWN part of the stage. The high part of the hill was further away from the audience. This was the UP part of the stage.
