Unit 6, Lesson 3: Orbitals

Where exactly ARE electrons? An orbital is the region of space that an electron occupies.

Shells contain orbitals! An electron shell is a group of orbitals, which is assigned a particular number. A subshell is a subgroup of orbitals within a shell that are all the same type (s, p, d, or f).

How Many Orbitals? Each numbered shell contains that number of subshells, in the order s, p, d, f. s-type subshells contain one s-orbital p-type... three p-orbitals d-type... five d-orbitals f-type... seven f-orbitals Try this: How many orbitals are in the 4th electron shell? 10 min

Brain Break!

Electron Configuration An electron configuration is a description of which orbitals in an atom contain electrons, and how many electrons are in each orbital. Orbitals are filled from lowest to highest energy level. To remember their order, we will use a “Christmas tree” diagram! Remember to go diagonally DOWN! – 15 min

Examples What is the electron configuration of Si? What is the electron configuration of F? Practice: Pg. 155 #26 (a, c, e, etc.) 20 min
