Energy – chapter 9

Energy is the ability to do work.

Work occurs when a force causes an object to move in the direction of the force.

A force Is a push…. Or a pull

Kinetic energy is the energy of motion Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. Anything that moves has kinetic energy.

An object has greater kinetic energy when 1) It moves faster 2) Or it has greater mass

Potential energy is the energy of position or shape. http://www.lookingforadventure.com/bungeejumpingvideo.htm

To increase gravitational potential energy Increase height Increase mass http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/energy-skate-park

Which has more gravitational potential energy?

The guy to the left, because Even though he has the same weight (mass x gravity is in newtons), he has a longer distance to fall.

Which has more gravitational potential energy?

The girl to the right, because even though they are at the same height, she has more weight.

Mechanical energy is the total of all kinetic and potential energy.

Kinetic energy and potential energy trade off Kinetic energy and potential energy trade off. As one is reduced the other increases….
