Exploring Careers In life, planning is key! Think outside the box!  There are thousands of careers.  There are very good career opportunities that do not require a four-year degree. No Path =Little to no options                                                  Path=Options

EDUCATIONAL CHOICES 2-year (or less) technical or certificate program 2-year college, then transfer to 4-year university 4-year university

PREPARING FOR COLLEGE (CURRENT SENIORS) APPLY! Applying online is preferred by most colleges. Request a transcript be sent to any college to which you send an application. Study for and retake the ACT. Apply for a FSA ID. Complete your FAFSA beginning October 1st. Check email, Senior Facebook page, and in your counselor’s office often for scholarship applications.

FAFSA Deadlines To apply for federal student aid, you can apply between Oct. 1, 2018, and June 30, 2020, for the 2019–20 school year.

Preparing for Scholarship Applications Get organized! Get your resume updated or completed. Start essays. Ask 3-4 people to be references or write letters of reference for you. Preparing prevents procrastination. Procrastination can cause you to lose money!!!

PRIVATE / FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS Use a scholarship search engine such as FastWeb, Peterson’s, Niche, AchieveAlabama, Scholarships.com, Kuder Navigator. Check affiliations with church, employers, civic groups, etc. Usually smaller amounts at a time. Can take to any college. No limit on the number you apply for.

Application Cost Applications can cost $50-$90 Students with financial need may qualify for an application fee waiver through (National Association for CollegeAdmission Counseling). Visit www.nacacfairs.org/learn/fee-waiver/ Some schools will waive the application fee when you visit campus, talk to a recruiter at a college fair, or if you scored well on your ACT, you may receive application fee waivers in the mail, so watch your mailbox

The Common Application What is the Common Application If it is accepted by the schools you are interested in, one way to save time is to use the Common Application. Students fill out one master application which can be sent to hundreds of schools nationwide, including some Alabama schools.

HBCU Common Application Are you interested in attending an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities)? Check out www.commonblackcollegeapp.com, where you can apply to any of the 50 member institutions at once for only $35, including Alabama State University and Tuskegee University.

What is a good score on the ACT? 20-24 for admissions to a university 27 & up for academic scholarships Community Colleges (two-year colleges) do not require an ACT score. If you do have one, they will use your scores to place you in certain classes. If you do not have an ACT score, or you do not have a good score, they will allow you to take the AccuPlacer test to determine what kind of classes you need to take. Note: Remedial classes cost $$$, but do not earn college credit.

WHAT DOES IT COST- CACC Tuition=$3,510 Off campus room & board=$7,200 Books and Supplies=$1,400 Fees=$870 Total=approximately $12,980/yr. (Based on stats from 2016/2017)

WHAT DOES IT COST- Trenholm State Tuition and fees = $4,350/year Books and supplies-$2,400 for   Room & Board =$4,950 Other cost=$2,400 Total = approximately $14,100/year

What Does it Cost Tuition =$10,780 Tuition=$11,276 Fees-$800 Meal Plan/Board-$4,502 Meal Plan/Board-$13,332 Room-$8,900 Books & Books & Supplies-$1200 Supplies-$6,982(may vary Total= approx. $24,982/year Total=approx. $31,590 Note: These figures are approximate per year cost. Out of state tuition is 2-3 times that of an in- state student regardless of college.

What Do I do when I get to College? Choose a career, NOT a major. Remember that a degree is not necessarily a ticket to a career. Look at the college course of study for a major in which you are interested. Do these classes excite you / interest you? Think outside the box! There are thousands of careers.
