PREPARING FOR COLLEGE (CURRENT SENIORS) APPLY! Applying online is preferred by most colleges. Request a transcript be sent to any college to which you send an application. Study for and retake the ACT. Apply for a FSA ID. Complete your FAFSA beginning October 1st. Check email, Senior Facebook page, and in your counselor’s office often for scholarship applications.

Preparing for Scholarship Applications Get organized! Get your resume updated or completed. Start essays. Ask 3-4 people to be references or write letters of reference for you. Preparing prevents procrastination. Procrastination can cause you to lose money!!!

Check affiliations with church, employers, civic groups, etc. Usually smaller amounts at a time. Can take to any college. No limit on the number you apply for.

The Common Application What is the Common Application If it is accepted by the schools you are interested in, one way to save time is to use the Common Application. Students fill out one master application which can be sent to hundreds of schools nationwide, including some Alabama schools.

HBCU Common Application Are you interested in attending an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities)? Check out www.commonblackcollegeapp.com, where you can apply to any of the 50 member institutions at once for only $35, including Alabama State University and Tuskegee University.

What is a good score on the ACT? 20-24 for admissions to a university 27 & up for academic scholarships Community Colleges (two-year colleges) do not require an ACT score. If you do have one, they will use your scores to place you in certain classes. If you do not have an ACT score, or you do not have a good score, they will allow you to take the AccuPlacer test to determine what kind of classes you need to take. Note: Remedial classes cost $$$, but do not earn college credit.
