Respiratory System The respiratory system is the body system that provides body cells with oxygen and removes carbon dioxide that cells produce as waste.

Respiratory System In Class Notes:

Function: (30.5) Exchanges gasses between blood and air Removes carbon dioxide Allows us to speak (not a function per se)

Organs Involved: (30.5) Nose and Mouth: air enters and is warmed and moisturized Pharynx: the throat, passageway for air and food, contains epiglottis Epiglottis: covers part of pharynx while you swallow (keeps food out of respiratory system) Larynx: voice box, vibrate during exhale, allow speech Trachea: windpipe, splits into bronchi Bronchus(-i): end of pathway to lungs Lungs: football-sized organs, filled with spongey tissue that exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide Bronchioles: branches of bronchi, like upside down trees Alveoli: grape-like clusters at end of Bronchioles, air sacs that gather the oxygen

Sequence of breathing: Diaphragm contracts, pressure increases, lungs fill Air enters through mouth or nose Passes through pharynx, larynx, and trachea Enters the bronchi, bronchioles, and the alveoli Alveoli gather oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide Diaphragm relaxes, lung pressure decreases, air rushes away

Diagram: Here are all the parts: (find a diagram you like)

Parts you should know: Can you find a blank one to practice labeling?

How is breathing regulated? What organ controls it? Lungs/ diaphram What causes increases and decreases in rates? Physical activity

What effects does smoking have on the respiratory system? Tar from cigarettes coats inside of lungs As tar builds up, there’s less lung capacity for oxygen Less lung capacity= hard time breathing

Name at least 3 disorders & provide a description: Bronchitis: infection of bronchial tubes (mucus forms inside of them, making breathing harder Cancer Lung: cancer form in the tissue of the lungs Throat: cancerous tumors that develop in throat/ voice box Emphysema: alveolar walls and capillary blood vessels are destroyed, limiting oxygen and CO2 transfer
