Nonfiction Define nonfiction A text that is true, not fake. A text that is factual.

We will be studying 4 types of nonfiction. Biography – written about someone else Autobiography – written by you about yourself. Memoir – written about one period in your life. Diary – a daily record about your life.

What is the purpose of reading a biography, autobiography, or any nonfiction text? To be informed To be entertained To be persuaded To be informed. You are learning about that person or concept. Think about your science book, math book, or social studies book.

(Which text pattern would you use?) Imagine you are writing a biography. How would you organize your information? Why? (Which text pattern would you use?) Chronological You want to tell information in the order that it happened in. Remember the timeline you created? It would be hard to read about someone’s life if you weren’t told about it in the proper order.

How do you find the main idea of a paragraph? Ask yourself “What is the focus of this section?” Don’t look at the entire story, only the section you are being asked about.

How do you create a good summary? Tell: Who did What, When, Where, and Why they did it. Then, tell me How they did it.

What does a good summary include? The beginning, middle, and end. It explains what the entire text was about.

What are sensory images (sensory details)? Remember “Imagery” Using the 5 senses: Smell Sound Taste Sight Touch

Which example is a simile? How do you know? “She floats down the aisle Like a pageant queen”. Speak Now – Taylor Swift A simile uses the word “like” to compare two things.

Which one doesn’t belong? How would you fix it? I am going over there after school. That is there house. There is one answer to this question. “That is there house.” THERE is used to show location. That is their house. THEIR shows ownership.

Which is correct? Their in my language arts class. They’re in my language arts class. There in my language arts class. “They’re in my language arts class.” They’re = they are
