Trenchless Rehabilitation - Benefits Limit Traffic Disruptions: As watermain lining only requires small pits, the City of Greater Sudbury along with many other municipalities requires all work to be done at night and the use of road plates over pits during the day. This allows busy roads to be opened to traffic throughout peak times without disruptions.

Trenchless Rehabilitation - Benefits Hard to Reach Areas: In many instances it may not be feasible to replace a watermain without a large cost or disturbance to sensitive environments. The City of Greater Sudbury has utilized pipe lining techniques to repair pipes under bridges, creeks, and railway tracks .

CGS Watermain Lining Program 2011 - Test project 2015 - First 3 Year Contract 2018 - ~$6 Million Watermain Rehabilitation has evolved steadily in the City of Greater Sudbury. Just a few years ago this journey began by initiating a test lining project in order to evaluate the benefits of watermain lining. From there a small portion of the budget was allocated annually in order to implement both a sanitary and watermain lining program. Today, we have been approved to implement a 3 year contract for both sanitary and watermain lining worth a million dollars each, annually.

CGS Watermain Lining Program Choosing locations for lining: Break frequency Operational concerns (ie. Discoloured water, low pressure) Resurfacing projects Access restrictions In order to prioritize what locations are to be lined, CGS looks at multiple different criteria. A large portion of locations are based on a master list which prioritizes pipe segments based on length and break frequency. As well, continual communication with Operations staff alerts us to priority areas based on locations which break less frequently but are more difficult to locate and thus cost a lot more time and money or locations with chronic discolored water issues. A key consideration is also locations that roads plans to resurface or reconstruct. A replacement is much less cost effective on a road that Roads is only planning on resurfacing where as a road reconstruction is the perfect opportunity to replace a main while minimizing cost to Water/wastewater. Lining ahead of roads resurfacing ensures we will not have to dig up a newly resurfaced road due to failing infrastructure below.
