Free Response Questions FRQs Free Response Questions

What is a FRQ? FRQ stands for Free Response Question This is the type of “essay” you will do for AP Human Geography FRQs are unlike any other “essay” you have done before. There is NO fluff There are only answers to questions in written form

Why must you do FRQs? 1. There needs to be another way to show what you know other than multiple choice questions… 2. You must be able to clearly articulate the correct information in written form in order to be considered ‘college level’. 3. If you want to pass the AP exam (which you do), you must do well on the FRQ portion of the exam.

What will the FRQs be like? There will be three FRQs You will get 75 minutes to complete all three This breaks down to 25 minutes for each one Each will be on a different topic covered throughout the year You will write your responses in PEN in a written response booklet given to you on the day of the exam Each one will have at least one part to the question, some may have up to six or eight parts to the question. You answer ALL parts in the order they are asked.

How do I write a FRQ? 1. In pen 2. Legibly 3. In complete sentences 4. Following the format in which the question is asked 5. With as much information you know about the topic

How are FRQs scored? FRQs are scored using a specific individualized rubric created by CollegeBoard. AP teachers from all over the country meet after exams and score the FRQs. Each FRQ is read by three different scorers and a median score is taken. Every FRQ has its own set of points based on the question(s) and its parts.

What will FRQs be like in class? At least one per chapter/unit First two will count as an assignment grade 3rd FRQ- end of 1st semester- count as quiz grade All FRQs in 2nd semester- count as exam grade Old exam FRQs From test prep books All scored using assigned rubrics

* All are chances to improve before taking the AP exam! You will have either a practice or graded FRQ each chapter. It is important to become a pro at writing FRQs, so you will get lots of practice this year! Sometimes, your FRQs will be Self-scored Peer-scored Or Teacher-scored All ways will use the CollegeBoard provided rubric * All are chances to improve before taking the AP exam!

Now lets look at actual FRQs

Lets practice! Complete this FRQ: Name Date FRQ #1 Complete this FRQ: 1. A. What is your name and where do you live? B. What is the most interesting place you have ever been to and why is it so interesting? C. If you could go anywhere in the world for free, where would you go and why?
