Sentence – A group of words that has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. Sentence fragment – lacks one of these elements. * It may be missing a subject or a verb or both, or the fragment may depend on nearby sentences to make sense. (USUALLY A dependent clause) Examples: 1) Roused the fear of the congregation. (NO SUBJECT) 2) EVEN ON HIS DEATHBED. (NOT A COMPLETE THOUGHT)

Although sentence fragments are acceptable in informal writing and dialogue, you should avoid using them in formal writing. There are two ways to correct a fragment: 1) Add the missing subject or verb. *The black veil roused the fears of the congregation. (subject added) 2) rewrite the fragment to make it a complete sentence. (sometimes this involves connecting the fragment to a neighboring sentence. * reverend hooper wore the veil even on his deathbed. (Subject and predicate added)

Run-on sentences while a fragment is not a complete thought, a run-on sentence contains two or more complete thoughts running into one another, without respect for boundaries. There are two common types of run on sentences: - a fused sentence has no punctuation at all between its complete thoughts. - a comma splice has only a comma between the two complete thoughts.

Examples: The sexton rang the bell the people walked toward the church Examples: The sexton rang the bell the people walked toward the church. (fused sentence) the sexton rang the bell, the people walked toward the church. (comma splice)

there are several ways to fix a run-on sentence: there are several ways to fix a run-on sentence: 1) turn the run-on sentence into two or more separate sentences. Example: The sexton rang the bell. The people walked toward the church. 2) Add a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS), and if the run-on sentence is a fused sentence, add a comma before the conjunction. Example: the sexton rang the bell, and the people walked toward the church. 3) separate the complete thoughts with a semi-colon. Example: the sexton rang the bell; the people walked toward the church.

there are several ways to fix a run-on sentence: there are several ways to fix a run-on sentence: 4) add a subordinating conjunction (such as because, although, until, or when) and, if necessary, a comma before the conjunction. *think dependent clause* Example: the sexton rang the bell while the people walked toward the church. 5) use a semi colon and a conjunctive adverb. Example: the sexton rang the bell; consequently, the people walled toward the church.
