Receipt, Production and Consumption Forecast for 2018 Iron and steel metal recycling in the United States Sulagna Dash Adviser: Prof. Lesley D. Frame Department of Technology Management University of Bridgeport, Bridgeport, CT Background Objective Conclusion Iron the is most widely used metal of all. Every year thousands of Mt of Iron and steel scrap is generated from sources like automobiles, industrial applications etc. Its economically beneficial to recycle the scrap to manufacture new products. In the production of steel, 99.9% of scrap melted is consumed in the new steel while producing negligible environmentally undesirable waste. Our goal is to study the steel compositional variability due to variability in scrap, analyze the market data for steel recycling industry and to illustrate the trends in terms of volume and grade of recycled steel by different regions in the United States. We also aim to forecast the volume of recycled steel for different regions using available historical data. From the trends we can conclude most of the iron and steel scrap is received and consumed in the north and south central region of the U.S. Shredded and fragmentized steel is the most widely recycled carbon steel. However, we were unable to analyze more on other types of steel scrap as company proprietary data in some regions was withheld from publishing. Research Method Receipt from outside sources, production, and consumption data of iron and steel scrap was collected by region and grade, for different steel producers in United States. All the relevant information were compiled into a database using MS Excel. Data mining and data analysis techniques were used to study the variability and trend in the total scrap volume by region and grade. Based on availability of data and usage of steel the below 3 type of carbon steel were studied. No. 1 heavy melting steel Turnings and borings Shredded and fragmentized Exponential Smoothing forecasting method was applied with different values of smoothing constant (α) forecast the receipt, production, and consumption volume for all five regions in United States for Dec 2017 and 2018. This study is conducted based on data collected only from USGS. However, with more data collected from other sources like ISRI and AIST, a comprehensive research can be done to a analyze the variability in processes and scrap composition.
