Grade 8: The Story of the Church Lesson 2.1 Our help is in the name of the Lord Who made Heaven and Earth!

Nicene Creed For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

Witness- The Council of Nicea (pg. 62) -year 325 (after Christianity is legalized by Constantine) Heresy=denial of a Church doctrine -Arius (heretic) -Priest from Alexandria -excommunicated, but kept teaching -Taught: JC was human, not divine -Problem: people might question that salvation is from God -Athanasius -fought Arius’ teachings

A Religious Rebate (pg. 63) -Ecumenical Council= worldwide gathering of bishops/Pope to clarify church teaching -1st Council of Nicea -arranged by Constantine w/ 200 bishops -Developed the Nicene Creed -Stated: JC = to God and IS God -Arius refused to sign Creed -Athanasius (bishop of Alexandria) fought against his teaching, but lived in exile bc Arius had influenced leaders in Egypt

Other Heresies (pg. 63) -4th century -Heresy: denied goodness of creation and humanity -Fought by Augustine -said all of creation was good, including humans -Proof of goodness= JC’s being born into the world -Evil = when we deny God

Council of Chalcedon (pg. 63) -5th century -Heresy: taught JC was diving, not human -Bad bc JC can’t transform us in his death/Resurr. If he doesn’t share our humanity -Fought by Pope Leo the Great -guided Church to confirm belief that JC was 1 person w/ 2 natures: human and divine

Church Fathers (pg. 63) Church Fathers = early Church leaders whose teaching developed the doctrines of the faith -Athanasius: JC= fully divine -Augustine: all of creation is good - Pope Leo the Great: JC is human + divine nature
