Proposal for Local Administrator Advertisements November 2018 doc.: IEEE 802.11-18/2022r0 November 2018 Abstract Proposal for Local Administrator Advertisements Stephen McCann, BlackBerry Stephen McCann, BlackBerry

November 2018 doc.: IEEE 802.11-18/2022r0 November 2018 Background To address privacy issues (e.g. use of a randomised MAC address in a STA), the STA wants to be free to use a randomized MAC address while un-associated and configure the MAC address according to the address policy for the LAN once it selects the BSS. The MAC address needs to be allocated before the STA attempts to connect. However, the STA cannot know what MAC address policy is applied in the LAN before it associates. A STA can be configured to connect to multiple LANs, each having a different MAC address policy. Stephen McCann, BlackBerry Rich Kennedy, Research In Motion

November 2018 doc.: IEEE 802.11-18/2022r0 November 2018 Discussion A small amount of information (e.g. bits) could be advertised from the network AP to a STA about Local Administrator capabilities. Is this required? What needs to be advertised? Single bit to advertise where locally administered addresses are permitted. Several bits to identify the local administered address policy (e.g. ELI or AAI) Solution New bit(s) in Beacon/Probe Response. New IE in Beacon/Probe Response/ANQP-element Even though advertisements about MAC address policy may be provided by the network, any MAC address allocation must be negotiated after network selection and before the completion of association.
