The First and Second Estates (Nobles and clergy) had privileges, including access to high offices and exemptions from paying taxes, that were not granted to the members of the Third Estate (commoners). 2) New Enlightenment ideas of equality, liberty, and democracy, along with the American Revolution began inspiring the people of France. 3)Population doubled, food shortages, and government sank deeper into debt. Women riot over the price of bread.

4) Third Estate met at the National Assembly and pledge an oath (Tennis Court Oath) to draft a new Constitution. 5)Rumors flew that the King was ordering mercenary guards to massacre French citizens so the people stormed the Bastille Prison to get gunpowder. 6)Rebellion spreads to the countryside where the peasants burned houses and attacked the nobles (The Great Fear).

7) The National Assembly adopts The Declaration of the Rights of Man (based on The American Declaration of Independence). 8)France goes to war with Austria and Prussia. 9) The radical group called The Jacobins establish the Committee of Public Safety and jail King Louis. The King is beheaded in the guillotine.

The Reign of Terror starts and 3,000 are executed under the guillotine. 11) Robespierre is executed, ending the Reign of Terror. 12) The Directory takes control of France and elects Napoleon as General of the French Army.
