Northwood Middle School Classroom Based Assessment Grade 8 History: Can you “do the work” of a historian?

What do historians do? Read/Research/Learn Develop questions Research some more Interpret their findings/evidence Determine answers to their questions Share/Explain/Defend their answers to their colleagues, usually in writing Cite their evidence and their sources

What are you going to do? A similar thing! Take your learning about Greece and other civilizations Choose a question Research your question and determine your answer Gather your evidence Write an argumentative essay to explain your answer using reasons, evidence, and explanations Cite your evidence in your essay and create a bibliography of your sources.

Steps in the Process: Research phase: Choose a question, review and learn about the topic, and decide on your answer Organizing phase: Complete a graphic organizer with your reasons, evidence (cited) and explanations, then defend your thinking and evidence in a peer review Writing phase: Write a rough draft, participate in peer editing, and write a final draft and bibliography

Calendar/Timeline May 10-11 May 14-15 May 16-17 May 18 May 21-22 Research Organizing Peer Review Writing Due Date May 10-11 May 14-15 May 16-17 May 18 May 21-22 May 23-24 May 25 FRIDAY Be aware that some of these days you will not be in my class due to the SBA testing schedule. It looks like two weeks of work but it is only 8 days in class, and two of those days are Wednesdays.

Types of Historical Questions Compare/Contrast Questions: Take one aspect of culture or civilization and compare that between Greece and another culture you have studied this year or our US culture using evidence to explain similarities and differences. Causes of Conflicts Questions: Choose a Greek conflict and research to discover WHY that conflict happened. Decide which reason was the most important and defend your decision. Debatable Questions: Choose a question and use primary sources to discover an answer. Then support your answer with evidence.

Questions Look over the questions on the handout. Discuss each as a table group Ask clarifying questions. Make sure you understand what the question is asking you to do. Choose 3 questions that you are interested in Take home and discuss with parents/guardians, other people Choose 1 Get a signature Bring handout back FRIDAY/TOMORROW for a grade.

Do Now Research Day 1 Find your new seat. You will be facing the wall. This allows me to keep an eye on your computer screen (kind of). Get out your yellow CBA Question Options sheet with a signature on it. I will come by and talk to you briefly about your choice as I stamp your sheet. Begin your research. Remember the data bases (ABC-CLIO, etc.) on Frequently Used KSD Links page. Remember that taking notes in OneNote will save links to your sources, which will be helpful when compiling your bibliography and citing your sources.
