Objective SWBAT identify differences in the internal cellular structures of plants and animals, and in how plants and animals get energy.

Animal Cells Have a nucleus Have a cell membrane, but no cell wall Have mitochondria, but do not have chloroplasts.

Plant Cells Have a nucleus Have a cell wall outside the cell membrane Have chloroplasts and mitochondria.

Check For Understanding Which characteristic correctly describes a difference between plant cells and animal cells? Animal cells have cell membranes, but plant cells do not. Plant cells have cell membranes, but animal cells do not. Animal cells have chloroplasts, but plant cells do not. Plant cells have chloroplasts, but animal cells do not.

Cell Wall Allows plant cells to stand upright, even in the wind  helps them get sunlight. Not having a cell wall allows animal cells to be more flexible  helps them move to catch prey.

Chloroplasts Plants use chloroplasts to conduct photosynthesis, in which they absorb sunlight and turn it into food. This makes them producers. Animals don’t need chloroplasts, because they are consumers – they eat food.
