Spiral Analysis of Common Core ELA #7 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas Standard development across grades 6-12

Analysis Looking at the progression of the spiral curriculum for grades 6-12, students are exposed to a series of practices that build on each grade level in order to provide them with an in-depth learning experience. Starting in grade 6, students learn to compare and contrast (using a Venn diagram) reading and listening to text. In grade 7, the compare and contrast exercise is between special effects used by each medium with the original text. In grade 8, students look at the text in comparison to a film/play and the director’s choices. 9-10 grade students analyze how a specific subject is presented in two artistic mediums. 11-12 grade students evaluate different versions of a play (Shakespeare and American writer) and how they interpret the text.

Reading #7 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse formats and media, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words. Grade 6- focuses on the way in which student’s perception change after viewing or listening to the text. Grade 7- focuses on how the student’s interpretation changes based on medium. Grade 8- students evaluate how authors’/directors’ adaptations affect the meaning of the text (from Common Core Standards- Resource Page, 2013)

Reading #7 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas Grade 9-10 Look at how skilled readers evaluate different artistic mediums that deal with the same subject. Grade 11-12 Students evaluate multiple sources of mediums and look at how different versions deal with issue/problem. (from Common Core Standards- Resource Page, 2013)

Seeing, hearing text Grade 6- focuses on the way in which student’s perception change after viewing or listening to the text. Activity to recognize plot : -show a movie clip -compare and contrast the text and clip What do you see and how do you perceive the text as you listen? Discuss the experience.

...and Action! Grade 7- focuses on how the student’s interpretation changes based on medium. Activity: read Whitman’s “O Captain! My Captain” watch a clip from “The Dead Poets’ Society” read, discuss listen/view How does the lighting (sound) change/affect the meaning of words?

Director’s choices Grade 8- students evaluate how authors’/directors’ adaptations affect the meaning of the text Activity: read Edgar Alan Poe’s “The Raven” Watch “The Raven” Simpson’s (animation) “The Raven” film Analyze how the intentional and unintentional decisions made by the director impact meaning of poem

Close reading a scene Grade 9-10 Look at how skilled readers evaluate different artistic mediums that deal with the same subject. Analyze a representation of the subject key scene/ideas listen to the soundtrack of the film related art work What are some choices made by the filmmakers to set the scene?

How did they do it? Grade 11-12 Students evaluate multiple sources of mediums and look at how different versions deal with issue/problem (i.e. revenge).

Making choices Grade 11-12 Students evaluate multiple sources of mediums and look at how different versions deal with issue/problem (i.e. revenge).
