Battle of Rivas Day By: Katie Clark
Why it's celebrated? In 1856, costa rica defeated confederate invaders, lead by William Walker, and every year they celebrate their victory on April 11th. It's also known as Juan Santamaria day in nicaragua. Juan was seen as a hero to costa because his ultimate sacrifice. The confederates had a wooden fort setup and Juan charged towards the fort with a torch and managed to burn it down even though he was shot repeatedly. This day honors his death and many others life's lost in this battle.

This week is filled with dancing, concerts, and plenty of food/ beverages to enjoy. The largest festival of them all is the one held in Alajuela, where Juan was born.
