Training In-service (professional development) Staff Meetings Online Orientations Evaluations
Training: In-service Perfect time to get in front of teachers Try to make training specific for each group Periodic refresher
Training: Staff Meetings Take 10 minutes a month to cover a safety topic Address unsafe behaviors noticed by supervisors Remind employees to work according to policy
Training: Staff Meetings MSBA sends out tool kits to our Workers’ Comp Trust members about every other month These include a handout, poster and powerpoint Ask your provider for training materials
Training: Online Ask your provider if there are online training opportunities available to your district Online training allows the employee to access the training at any time http://app.britteam.com/index.cfm?ss=154
Training: Orientation New Employees—Very formal orientation-be very specific about the expectations Orientation should take place before the employee begins the job or the first day on the job Existing Employees- Have a formal orientation for your returning employees every year Do you have training outlined in the handbook? Or your “on boarding” procedures? Do you know what topics should be covered?
Training: Evaluations Follow up/Evaluate your employees after orientation Evaluate both new and returning employees Go over the evaluation with the employee Document unsafe behavior and the plan to correct it Emphasize the expectation of using proper PPE and using safe processes
Facility Walkthroughs Someone should walk through your facilities regularly Make a list of items to be corrected, then follow up Ask if your carrier will send someone to walk your buildings It doesn’t have to be an “expert” It doesn’t have to be a maintenance person. Just need a fresh set of eyes Consider sending someone from one of the other schools to look around
Accident Investigation An investigation should be done as soon as possible after the incident Not to place blame or find fault Record any witness statements Investigation can be a preventative measure for future incidents
Timely Claims Reporting According to industry averages; claims cost twice as much if they are not reported within 7 days Injured employees receive treatment quicker Puts your carrier on notice Property, Auto Liability, etc. Don’t wait for police reports. Go ahead and contact your provider IE: our insured vehicle hits Lane but he doesn’t hear from the adjuster for several days…now Lane is mad WC presentation after lunch
Property Appraisals Ensure your district is properly insured Make sure property schedules are accurate Insured to value Penalties
Resources Contact your insurance provider to see what resources are available to you MSBA has some powerpoint presentations that we are happy to share
