The Panama Hat The Panama hat was created in Ecuador but was called the Panama hat because it was worn by many of the workers on the Panama Canal. Basically, the straw hats were originated and made in Ecuador. But there was not enough people (market) for them to become successful and make a profit in Ecuador. So, the creators took them to Panama when they were building the Panama Canal. It became a quick trend and fashion statement to be wearing one as they were building the Panama Canal. Even our US president (I think Teddy Roosevelt) bought one and wore one. They became very popular. But since no one knew they were actually made in Ecuador, they became known as Panama hats, not Ecuador hats. So, the Panama hat originated in Ecuador.

Corn “Beer,” or “chicha de maíz” Traditionally made by indigenous women chewing up corn (or yucca, for a different variety) and spitting it out to help it ferment. Nowadays it is not always made this way! It is also popular in Perú. Video Favorite beverage: women chew up the corn and then spit in the mixture and then it ferments . . . It is traditionally prepared from a specific kind of yellow maize (jora) and is usually referred to as chicha de jora. It has a pale straw color, a slightly milky appearance, and a slightly sour aftertaste, reminiscent of hard apple cider. It is drunk either young and sweet or mature and strong. It contains a slight amount of alcohol, 1-3%
