Monday, August 8, 2016 Learning Target: I will show what I already know about reading. Today’s Agenda: Burchette’s Basics Battle Royale

Monday, August 8, 2016 Burchette’s Basics

Monday, August 8, 2016 What’s Most Important? Respect— Responsibility— Trust– What is it? How do we earn it? Respect— What is it? How do we show it? Responsibility— What is it? How does it help us grow?

Bring the following items to class everyday Pen and/or pencil Agenda Notebook (You can store it in the classroom when you don’t need it at home.) Independent Reading Material An Open Mind 

The beginning of class… Monday, August 8, 2016 The beginning of class…

Monday, August 8, 2016 1 Enter the classroom quietly and follow the instructions on the board in the order in which they appear. We have very little time together, so it is important that you use your time wisely and get started quickly.

Monday, August 8, 2016 2 Copy the homework and Important Dates in your agenda. *Random Agenda checks will take place and can earn (or lose) points for your class.

Monday, August 8, 2016 3 After you update your agenda, you should pick up your notebook and complete your warm up. Be sure to follow directions carefully.

Monday, August 8, 2016 4 Read your independent reading material or journal while you wait for others to finish. *Random book checks will take place that can earn (or lose) points for your class.

Helpful Hints Monday, August 8, 2016 You’re expected to be in your seat and working on your opening activities by the time the bell rings. While I welcome your questions, this is not the time for them (unless it is for bathroom, clinic, or locker needs). I promise to answer your questions, but I have opening activities that I need to take care of as well. If you need to sharpen your pencil, you can just get up and do so as long as you don’t disrupt the class on the way. The same goes for tissues. Pencil sharpeners as well as tissues (with hand sanitizer) are located on both sides of the room. Please use the supplies closest to your assigned seat to avoid disruption. 

Helpful Hints Monday, August 8, 2016 Emergency Passes must be used at all times other than independent work time. This includes, but is not limited to, whole class instruction and group work. If you must leave the room during an assessment (quizzes/tests), you must use an emergency pass. Extra supplies are available for your use. Please return your borrowed items at the end of class so that others can use them when they need them. Groups are responsible for making sure their table baskets are in working order during pack up time. If there is something amiss with your table basket when you arrive, it is your responsibility to let me know; otherwise, your group may be held responsible for any missing items. The table baskets are not trash receptacles! Please dispose of your trash appropriately. The materials in the table baskets should be used for academic purposes only. Most of these items were purchased with my personal money and others were donated by your 7th grade peers. Wasting materials will not be tolerated. (I know this sounds harsh, but if we waste the materials, we will not have them when we actually need them.)

Helpful Hints Monday, August 8, 2016 You should check the blog for all of your make up work. If there is a handout you need, or if you have a question about a specific assignment, please see me during homeroom. We may not have time during class, and I don’t want you getting further behind. You are responsible for getting and turning in all work missed during an absence. You should turn all of your make up work into the make up work tray located in the front of the classroom. If there is any reason (including absence) you are not turning in an assignment, you must fill out a missing assignment reflection. Please be sure to read and follow all instructions on the missing assignment reflection sheet in order to turn late work in for partial credit. Work turned in due to absence will not receive a point deduction as long as it is turned in within the allowed time. All late work should be dated and turned into the make up work tray located in the front of the classroom.

Battle Royale! Monday, August 8, 2016 Work with your team to earn points! All total points will go towards Burchette’s Battle. The team with the highest points of the day will earn additional points for their class. While I want you to have fun, please remember this is also a learning environment and activity. There are classes around us not playing a game, and we don’t want to disturb them.

Monday, August 8, 2016 Homework for Parents It is so important to me that we work together as a team and know each other well! In order to start that off, I have a homework assignment for YOU!  In 1,000 words or less, write a letter that introduces your child to me. I get to know the “student” side of your child, but I know that there is much more to him/her. Please know that I am only reading it for content – I am not concerned with grammar or spelling, and it can be in any language! This assignment can be turned in as soon as it’s finished, but is due on Monday, August 15, 2015. Letters may be sent in with your student or emailed to the teacher. Even though there is a “due date,” I will accept these letters at any time during the year! Due: Monday, August 15th, 2016

Monday, August 8, 2016 Independent Reading Selection You will need to have a book with you at all times during 7th grade. These books will be used in both your reading class and your language arts class. You are free to choose whatever book you like for reading. Your language arts teacher may have specific genre requirements at different times during the year. I am requiring that my classes have their books no later than Monday, August 15th. We will have time in all of the reading classes this week to check out books during our Media Center Orientation. All of my classes will complete their orientation on Friday, August 12th. Due: Monday, August 15th, 2016
