PHOTOSYNTHESIS UNIT 5: Life Science

LESSON OBJECTIVES: TSW Explain the importance of photosynthesis Write and interpret the chemical equations for photosynthesis. Describe what happens during the light reactions and the Calvin Cycle. CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING: 1. How are plant cells different from animal cells? 2. In what organelle does photosynthesis take place?

VOCABULARY Chlorophyll: Photosynthesis: Stomata: Stroma: Thylakoids:

WHAT IS PHOTOSYNTHESIS? Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make their own food using the sun’s energy, water, and carbon dioxide. Almost all organisms get their energy from photosynthetic organisms. For example, if a bird gets food from a caterpillar, it indirectly gets its energy from the plants that the caterpillar has eaten. Therefore, the process of photosynthesis is central to sustaining life on Earth.

WHAT IS PHOTOSYNTHESIS? During photosynthesis, carbon dioxide and water combine with solar energy to create glucose and oxygen. Glucose is a sugar that as the food source for the plant. Oxygen is the waste of the photosynthesis. https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=C1_uez5WX1o

THE PROCESS OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS The process of photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplast. Chloroplast is one of the main differences between animal cells and plant cells. There are separate parts of a chloroplast: The inner compartments formed the flatten sacs, or thylakoids, also known as the thylakoids sacs. The interior space that surrounds the thylakoids is filled with a fluid called stroma. This is where the carbon dioxide is used to make glucose.

THE REACTANTS The reactants of photosynthesis are carbon dioxide, water, and the energy from the sun. Other substances include: Chlorophyll: the green pigment in the leaves that captures the sun’s energy. The Veins: carry water from the roots to the leaves. Stomata: the special opening from which carbon dioxide enters the leaf

THE PRODUCTS AND THE CHEMICAL REACTION The products of photosynthesis are glucose and oxygen. They are the substances found after the reaction. Glucose is a sugar that is used as food for the plant. It can also be stored as energy (ATP) for later in the form of carbohydrates. Oxygen is a by product of photosynthesis and is release into the air. Animals need oxygen to live. https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=3pD68uxRLkM
